Director IDs

What is a Director ID?

This is a unique identifier provided to a director who has verified their identity with Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS), and will help to prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.

The deadline for existing directors is fast approaching – apply before 30 November 2022

For companies regulated by ASIC and registered under the Corporations Act 2001, existing directors first appointed on or before 31 October 2021 must apply for a Director ID by 30 November 2022.

Penalties for non-compliance

If a director fails to have an ID when required to do so, penalties of up to $13,200 (criminal) and $1,100,000 (civil) may apply.

Website Domain names

Shorter, simpler domain names are now available as a new option for Australian web and email addresses.

If your business has an existing eligible .au domain name (such as .com.au and .net .au) you have until 20 September 2022 to indicate whether you intend to apply for the exact match of your name in .au.

If you choose not to apply for the exact match of a name it will become available to the general public.  Your existing domain name will continue to operate as normal.

If you do apply for a .au match you don’t have to use this, but it’s in your best interests to register by the cut off to protect your business from impersonators or cyber criminals with intentions to impersonate your brand or your business
